Sanford-Orlando; An anonymous female caller contacted DBPR to report that track vet Olson has been euthanizing dogs on demand; she wished to remain anonymous because she said that if track management found out that she called, she would lose her job; she said that there was a truck full of dogs backed up to Olson's operating area and that when it left, there were no dogs left on it; she said she would call DBPR back in a few days to see what they had uncovered; Investigator Toner went to SOKC and inspected Olson's medical records which must be maintained for PMW and DEA; records showed that 5 dogs had been euthanized during Sept. 2010 (4 had been euthanized due to racing injuries, 1 had been euthanized due to kidney failure); Toner also spoke with Racing Secretary Scott Merkel who told Toner that SOKC's policy is to find out where every dog that leaves the track is going to next; Merkel stated that there is no reason for the track to kill non-productive greyhounds since they have a good relationship with the adoption kennels; the anonymous caller never called DBPR back to Toner closed the case without further action. |
